Mothers on

MULTIPLES

Mothers are special. And Mother?s Day celebrates and honours them for it. They?re also human, make mistakes, learn as they go, especially when they have twins crying in concert, or as Diliana Tihanova Gormley put it, ?stereo crying?. Diliana was 31 when her babies were born, November 4, 2015. Prior to Liliana and Sophia Gormley?s arrival, she had been in ?denial, freaked out, stressed, panic[ky]?. She?d suffered from the ?baby blues? after first child, Alexander?s birth five years earlier. She recalled the shocking loss of freedom, an infant ?stuck? to her 24/7, mounting responsibilities and little time or stamina. For her most recent pregnancy, the books she read on multiples were ?depressing?. She wondered if she?d be able to bond with two infants at once. After her twins came, however, she was ?overwhelmed with love, lucky, tired, in pain, determined to make the best of the situation and give the best I could to my babies?. Now five months, Lily and Sophia sense each other. ?They like knowing that the other one is close,? Diliana said. ?If one starts crying, the other one usually follows. They also like holding hands, touching each other?s faces, smiling and ?talking? to each other.? Diliana attends Meet-a-Mum Association (MAMA), as do Virginia Sánchez Marín and Wendy Wiseman. All have fraternal twins. Virginia, mother of 10-month-old Sofía and Luís Frost Sánchez, went into labour the night of her 42nd birthday, and her ?best birthday gift ever? arrived next day, June 19, 2015. She?d been scared, excited and anxious due to the higher risks associated with multiple births. ?For the mother,? she said, ?but specially for the babies. I prayed every day to be able to carry them for as long as possible and that they be born healthy.? The twins were premature, and spent two weeks under observation at the hospital, though not in an incubator. ?The lungs are the last things that develop,? Virginia explained. ?Every day, they do something new, funny and clever, and it is just wonderful to take it all in,? she said. ?I wish I had another pair of arms and an uninterrupted night?s sleep, but that is all just a phase that will be over all too soon.? She added: ?We are older parents ? in some respects you?re better prepared, more mature, more patient ? younger parents have more energy. Also, we are designed to have children sooner rather than later, especially with twins ? if we were 15 years younger, we would be closer in age to our children.? Virginia?s curious babies reach for each other, ?sometimes not as gently as one would hope,? she noted. Wendy?s twins are six-yearsold. She was 32 when Nate and Zoe arrived, November 18, 2009. ?My husband and I were beyond excited,? she said. ?There is something very magical about having twins.? Her son and daughter were five-and-a-half weeks premature. They spent the first three-and-a-half weeks in the Special Care Baby Unit at KEMH. Calling it a ?blessing,? she said: ?Everyone there was Continued on Page 2

Meet your fellow

MAMA

By B. Candace Ray

Just as mothers are celebrated this Mother?s Day, so should mothers be aware of and celebrate MAMA (Meet-a-Mum Association)/BAM (Bermuda?s Amazing Multiples). MAMA supports mothers with post-partum meetings and child education, offers weekday playgroups across the island, organises moms? nights out and connects families through fun activities. Among them are Easter, Hallowe?en and Christmas parties, as well as occasional train rides, picnics, beach play dates and fire station visits, gingerbread house decorating, trips to the aquarium, dinners, car boot sales and newsletters. MAMA, which counts more than 300 member families, is run entirely by volunteers. Jessica McLennan is the current president. Immediate past president, Wendy Wiseman said: ?I have heard many times how MAMA helped moms meet new friends and was a lifeline.? Sixteen families with twins make up the multiples sub-group, BAM. Virginia Sánchez Marín said: ?When you meet other mums of twins ? there is that immediate understanding of what you are going through in a way that no other parent will appreciate.? Wendy and other twin moms want to make BAM more visible, including by ?re-launch[ing] a mentorship programme, pairing a seasoned multiple mom and a new/ expectant one?. Prospective MAMA members can visit: www.mamabermuda.com/join-us/. For information about BAM, email: amazingmultiples@gmail.com.
